I ran away to London for three weeks after I gracefully quit my job. My best friend from high school lives in England and was gracious enough to allow me to crash at her place. Before I hopped on the plane, I was looking up “weird” things to see in London, because I’m a morbid girl…
In my search, I found… preserved animals in jars!
Warning: if you have a queasy stomach for dead, preserved animals, don’t click on the jump.
First, we went to the National History Museum to peer at pickled animals in jars. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize we could book a tour into the deep, deep archives of millions of specimens but we got to take a peek at the ones on display on the outer shelves. Let me tell you, there were tons of snakes and lizards.
This was just the surface of their collection too. Next up, we went to the Grant Museum of Zoology which was much smaller but their collection was certainly no less amazing. They have everything from strange creatures like the “penis” worm (and yes, it does look like a penis) to the common, orange house cat. Beyond animals, they also had a preserved human brain on display along with various other animal brains.
They even had a wall of thinly sliced specimens preserved in plastic slides. They almost looked like a wall of illustration/wallpaper. I kind of wished I had something like this at home.
If you’re into weird things, I recommend stopping by these museums… especially Grant Museum of Zoology!
